A Natural Tale ...

Today I witnessed two cardinals in love,

she perched below - he perched above.

She with her wings in a quick flutter,

endlessly chirping, much like a stutter.

He, being gallant, tried to appease,

flew off to the feeder to fetch her a seed.

They courted each other for hours on end,

kissing while meeting each other’s demands.

They shared of a bath, then preened in the cedar,

danced on the ground then back to the feeder.

With metallic chipping they shared in song,

she acting weak - he acting strong.

Would you admit how my tale took you back,

to those times in your life when you acted like that?

I would say I still live like that..my husband giving me all the pampering in the world at times..and the visual sweetness of this poem is so child like. It is reminiscent of some of my favorite stories as a young girl listening to my mother's gentle tone while reading out of a children's book such as child's craft. Beautiful!

    Beautiful!!!

I'll be darned, I had no idea you were a bird lover! That is a great picture of the two lovers in love, as well. I had forgotten that female birds are usually drab-colored, while the male is brighter and prettier. This is a wonderful poem, no doubt inspired by your natural ability to pair your muse with all of nature's wonders!! I'm happy to know you won a silver chalice for this fantastic masterpiece!!! Peace, Cyn

What a wonderful job you did with this poem. The cardinal is one of the easiest identified bird. The male is, not so much the female. The female has colors that are much more muted ranging from pinkins to an olive green.

I really like the way you injected a personal touch to this poem. The male being the strong protecter and the female a bit submissive. Well none, poet.

I don't think I was ever the chirping, hopping, playful kind of bird, but I've sure had some embarrassing moments around the birdbath that I'd prefer to keep to myself, lol. Love and romance makes us do some pretty silly things...for example I know it'll make you wear a balloon hat while searching for a rental at a video store...see what I mean by embarrassing.

I, of course see your meaning, how youth has its own abandon and those times can have fond memories.
