The Fjord of Tears

A thousand years have muddled by,
and all my tears have since run dry,
though by cruel chance I found them stored
and hidden in a secret fjord.

And now upon my ending years,
I fall into this Fjord of Tears,
and now cascade into their deep
where all my times of sorrows keep.

Thought I that they would have long past
but they for long have followed fast,
a chasm of my tears has kept
and held fast when I ne'er slept.

For tear-stained days and nights do stop;
could not amount to e'en a drop
but even happy men do cry
and over years a pool forms nigh!

Some wise men see the precipice
and hope that they could keep from this,
and start a long, strong bridge to make,
and with them heavy burdens take.

And out of time these wise men run
and now with heavy loads still stunned
do fall e'en faster than the rest
with troubled hearts within their breast.

This void is not though all men's fate!
For some few men have learned of late
that ife despite their baleful tears
can still be lived with smile and cheer,

and this their only saving grace:
that with a smile on their face,
even all the deepest sorrow
cannot keep them from the morrow,

and thus the gulf they do avoid,
a life well spent not all enjoyed
but lived in full and all dreams met,
and thus their sorrows they forget.
