Limpkin

Quixotically, this is an odd wading bird.
Aquatically it dines on apple snails.
Neurotically, walking it cocks it short tail.
Chaotically, it makes banshee like wails.

Questing from tropics to the Florida coast
Nesting in reeds or high up in a tree.
Manifesting the traits of both ibis and crane.
Divesting itself of all company.

Author notes

The Limpkin is a strange marsh bird of the New World tropics. It looks superficially like an ibis, has the general anatomy of a crane, and shares many behavioral traits with rails. It has been called "one of the many remarkable birds of the Americas, with its unique appearance, unusual diet and extraordinary calls [and] an unusual variety of nesting sites, ritualistic courtship feeding, and a mix of monogamy and polyandry...".

What a unique poem you wrote, about a very unique bird. I had heard of this bird before but not very familiar with it. I thank you for educating me on it. Of course I had to go read about it for my self. I also had to research the apple snail, I found it to be just as interesting as the limpkin.
I was not familiar with the "lento" poetry form either. What an education I got when reading your poem.

Thanks again for a great poem.
