What do you see when you look at me?
Is it just me, or the guideline created by society?
When you observe my fair skin, does Caucasian come to mind?
But my curly hair and freckles, make me another kind?
If I were to straighten my hair, would it be less a tease,
And provide you more ease to decipher my category?

How about we try this on for size.
Just take a minute and gave into my eyes.
Maybe, you'll come to find,
Possibly even realize,
That I have just been human the whole time.
Surprised?

Author notes

I just wanted to touch on the subject of how human kind has the tendency to want to place people in thier categories based on appearance. I am what you would call "interracial". I am Black, White, Irish, and Native American. So when people look at me, this wonder what I am and where I stand. I have light skin like a white person, freckles like an irish person, curly hair and dark brown eyes. I even have the the highcheek bones of a native american. So, needless to say, I am one confusing item. What I don't understand is...why does it matter if we are all of the smae species...homosapien!

Please tell me what you think

  • NICE! I love this questioning of how our society ranks us by physical characteristics when in reality we are all more alike than different. Love it. Love you AND missed you A LOT! BUT I'm back now so come on and write some moooore!
