The Day the Dog Died

a woman with a tin of cat food
looks at me
as Ken pats the dog

“I’m so sorry,” she says

we sit on the floor with him
in the small room with no examining table

I rub the spot below his ear
where the fur is soft
and cradle his head
as the vet kneels with her needle

and I can’t stop the damned sobs

Oh .. I can't stop them either now. We killed Snorties last July 12. I was so happy I was able to talk the vet into doing a house call. She hated the vet and the grass was soft and there a bunch of summer flowers blooming.

    I still miss her horribly.

It's sad to put an animal down, the poem was good, professional quality as befits a poet who has published a book. I wish you well with it and with your poetry readings, you're an encouragement to us all.

  • I actually read this one in the early morning and I felt like I had been hit by a shovel (no pun intended) and I still don't quite know what words to offer as advice or as condolences for that matter.

We had a dog named scamper who was half of something and a little else and his joints started to fail him in his old age and the vet recommended that because of the pain, we put him down. Hardest thing we ever did but at least he didn't suffer.

Poetically the best part is the holding of his head and the fur, quiet writing that reflects.

Sad work and even more sad, necessary.

Very good. Just flat out, very good.

I read this, and it got to me. Anyone that's owned pets, has been there. I used to have a lot of outdoor cats when I was growing up and they would just one day disappear. And I was grateful for that, because sometimes the not knowing is easier.

You really have a way with your words. The part of the soft spot of your dog's ear, drives the whole point like a stake. There's just no missing.

So well done. And my condolences...

I will surely be devastated when my cats pass away. So sorry for your loss
  • I went through this with my dogs. it's the hardest thing in the world to let go of them after so many years. I'm sorry for your loss, jan.

  • Pets are almost like children to most. Sorry never eases the pain of a loss. Time does not always heal either. We just grow used to the change.

  • ah, I would just be so heart broken if I had to go through this right now.

I just did that the other day. I could not pen the emotions any better than you just have.
    My consolations to you.

  • heartfelts to the family. i don't look forward to the day when one of ours is ready to leave the planet. may a sense of comfort come over your family if it's missing as it does when a good friend goes...

  • Sorry to hear it Jan. I remember when my dads dog rocky passed away, he could move, so we just held him in our arms until he went, one of the saddest things I have ever experienced in my life.

I'm so sorry about your loss...
We had to put our cat down a year ago and I bawled the whole time I was there, and then for quite some time afterwards...so I relate. This poem speaks from the heart.

  • Oh gosh, I am sorry honey.

Hm, I kinda like the last line there. But I think it'll go really good there if you make it like, even more emotional. Well, I mean don't just say sobs, I mean cram a load of meaning into one line. Lol. Anyways, it's really good. Makes me feel desolate too...

  • Always a tough call -- is it a poem?
or is it personal sort of thing?

Personally -- sorry for you loss.

    Poemwise.

I think the last line isn't necessary (or could be the title).

Hi there. Has Spring reached you yet?

yeah, the first question is why it took almost a week to post

I like the idea of the last line as title, actually, I may consider that.

Hi. It was actually more like summer for a week, almost two, but this week has been chilly and dark and miserable, it even snowed a bit on Wednesday on and off. My flowering almond is almost done flowering (the rain didn't help).

      • snowing petals here too.

I always appreciate being able to be honest on your poems. Truly.
  • you have always been a fovorite of mine ... personal and insprational ... and i've never needed a reason "why"

  • (had to make me cry at work, didn't you?)
