Give me a skin like a pangolin,
and the strength of a grizzly bear,
the height of a dove to rise above
and an eagle's steely glare;
or give me wells of love to draw
to end the drought I see.
Bring me to this eternal love,
so first, you may water me.

I'm not as tough as some appear to be.

Oh, Margaret...I love that you write a choice: Give me a hard and steely exterior to hold myself within, or give me love that is fluid and flowing to soothe myself and others...So lovely, and loving...I think you are like soft morning rain, for you water my spirit whenever it is dry and prickly with your refreshing words. Peace to you, always, Rhonda

Thanks so much Rhonda. It reminds me of "Beauty and the Beast", when we find out that the scary beast needs love like everyone else. Thanks for your encouraging comment and applause, I'm happy you came.

Dear Margaret
If you had all the attributes you wish
in the opening quatrain of your octavo,
though tall and tough and rather rough,
methinks it might not be enough
to earn the love you yearn or cries of 'bravo!'
from the loud crowd who choose the tastiest dish.
True toughness comes not from external characteristics but from the inner character. Drink deep at the well of love and be refreshed.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

Bonza poem, Hugh, thank you!
You have it right, adding layers of defences doesn't feed our need for love. It is tempting to cover up our hurts, but they can never be salved nor healed that way. The toughness that we need is to go out day after day, merely human. The love and admiration of our friends gives us courage. Thank you for your love and hugs, applause too! M

I like this very much, Margaret. I didn't know what a pangolin was, I had to look it up. Reminds me of an armadillo (the Texas speedbump).
May I offer a watering can?
Cheryl

Thank you Cheryl.
You know how it feels to be far away from everything familiar, and then to meet unkindness. A lot of people put on armour, when they might get what they need by asking for it. Thank you for being here.
