He was in the swamps of South Carolina fighting the yanks as they called them then. Sitting in the swamp mud waiting for the right time to make his kill. Then the regiment of Yankee troops came by he still waited, for he knew the general of the regiment would be in the back. He lay there in the mud while the soldiers feet stepped no more than and inch from his face. Waiting then he saw the shiny boots and the horses shoes. He jumped up and pointed his riffle at the generals head and said,
"If you wish to live you will give me your horse and not follow me."
The general in fear for his life gave Gauge the horse and in-turn Gauge let him live as he said.
Gauge had been ridding for days when he reached his home in Kentucky. He then saw an old friend (Brian) at the market.
"They have been starving" Brian had told him. "While you were fighting the yanks no one took care of them for you."
While Gauge was away fighting his family had been struggling to make it threw the winter. They had not enough food, but to barely get by on. So he took a look at the been of rice as he walked by running his hand over it. Leaving the stolen horse behind, caring his riffle he had left the market walking towards home. Then the merchant yelled stop that thief.
The young man had been running for hours it seemed. He had only taken a hand full of rice from the market. He Finlay got a head of them a good bit. He started thinking back into the war suddenly they were on top of him. They soon realized who he was. They then helped him up and said,
"I know your family is starving, Gauge all you had to do was ask."
"Oh the terrible things that have happened while you were gone" they said.
Not only had his family been starving the yanks had been coming and burning the crops, rapping the women, and killing the women and children, who had men fighting for the south in the war.
Gauge said quickly, "Give me your horse."
They quickly gave him a horse, Brian then rode off quickly towards his once prosperous farm. He met a Union regiment come away from the farm. He had payed them no attention. Then he had seen the smoke in the distance. He pushed the horse to ride faster. He then reached the farm he once knew as home. He quickly jumped off the horse and dashed into the front door. There they lay lifeless on the ground before him, dead they were. That day he vaughed to kill the General responsible for this order it was a mercy killing in the eyes of the commander, But it was truly a slaughter of innocent people, children.
So he then set out on his quest for revenge. He baried his dead and said what had to be said. After all had been done he headed towrad town. He went to Brians house on main street, he then asked brian,
"Will you help me my friend"
Brian said,"With what Gauge?"
"They killed Martha and the kids" Gauge then begains to cry.
" Who did Gauge talk to me now GODDAMN it Gauge tell me who did it!!!" Brian yelled
Gauge cryed out. "those damn yankees did, Brian will you help me kill those sorry sons'a bitchs?"
" Damn it Gauge you know I will, I'll Be right back" Brian runs in the house grabs his powder and riffle and coat, and comes back to the door where Gauge sits crying.
"Ok Gauge lets go" Brian says.
The two of them get on Brians two strongest horses and ride off into the night. Stoping at houses and asking if people had seen the Yankee Regiment come threw there latly. Getting closer and closer but yet further away from the one responceble. They then set up camp and Gauge is fast asleep.
Chapter 2 The Betrayal

Yank General," Is he comeing after us or what?"
