Faust Revisited (English Sonnet)

Missing image

My name is ego, let me be your friend.
I’ll guide you towards glory and success,
protect, respect and, just in case, defend.
With special powers those I owe, I bless.

Just offer me a place inside your soul,
and I will think and speak and act for you.
My presence fills your lack and makes you whole.
Together, path of fame we shall pursue.

I’ll make of you a goddess or a queen;
a saint – in case enlightenment’s your style.
Your flaws I’ll hide, your image I shall clean,
I’ll reinvent your past, erase your file.

How much I charge for this great service-pack ?
Just wait inside this cage, I’ll be right back …

Your portraying ego in high esteem in this poem appears to me camouflaging the actual truth you like to depict "How bad is ego!". A very different way of putting the matter in sonnet form. Very well done.

      not at all ...
      quite the contrary !
this verse is meant as a slightly humoristic, almost cartoon-like warning to beware of this seducing charmer at the risk to be locked inside its cage ...

This is very impressive, the silky voice of the tempter is clear in your quatrains. If we follow, we will get what is promised, and also all the consequences, which is your fantastic couplet. This is a delightful piece of spiritual humour, your wink is almost visible as we wait in the cage...
Lovely sonnet, great wisdom, fine humour - congratulations for the trophy too!

  • Oh! It is the the deception too many cast themselves aside for. A false fortune; an empty glory.

meaningful words contained in perfect form.

humm... definatly food for thought. This is penned wonderfully. The ego is only a tempoary and you have well defined this. Well done!

    Love,

    That ego smells sour!
So very true and you said that in a kind of amusing tone. We do see that every day in so many people, in so many ways. The last line...yeah right, sit and wait till bones dry
    Very good one Marion!

I am convinced that we see things through a similar lens... Although you are probably miles ahead of me, on the path to enlightenment... at least I'm heading in the right direction...??? A terrific Sonnet!!!

    Excellent take on the theme...
This offers so much to contemplate in a
few focused lines. The form and rhyme give
this a hint of mirth; suggesting how little
"ego" cares for our true self-worth or that
of those who's lives we touch. I'm so pleased
this write found a way into this theme. Blue

Great powerful ending, wonderful descriptions, draws the reader right in as is true with Ego or Self, or whatever we name the seductive one.

Hmmm, very true, serene one... very true.

Maybe consider pluralising "path" to "paths" in line 8, but otherwise a strong sonnet.

Ah, how great a price one places on one's soul
as self strives to reach its ultimate goal.

Remarkable illusion, the cage built by the words.

    Bravo!
