~~~*~~~
A trumpet blast both glorious and terrifying
Sounds on the Earth completely stupefying
All below the wondrous angel stare
Troubled as why Gabriels standing there.
~~~*~~~
“You wretched sinners,” the host did say.
“Shall now be facing your judgement day.”
“Not all lives as terrible as the last”
“But most with a truly soulless past.”
~~~*~~~
“Now God’s vengeance shall rain down.”
“On every city and every town.”
“Your world shall end, there’s no way out,”
“That is certain, there is no doubt.”
~~~*~~~
With this menacing threat he soared away
Returning to Heaven until another day.
While here on Earth we dread its consummation
Gazing at the sky in trepidation.
~~~*~~~
Most failed to believe what was there in the sky
He’s a fake, a sham, a trick of the eye.
But I knew throughout my entire core
That the words that he spoke I could not ignore.
~~~*~~~
I fell to my knees so lost and ashamed
How could’ve I have strayed as great Gabriel claimed.
I’d tried to live well without straying to sin.
But in this godless world I had no hope to win.
~~~*~~~
I rose from my knees feeling dirty and shameful
Not fit to live for it was proving to painful.
I kept on to school not knowing direction
And arrived at the doors to see the selection.
~~~*~~~
Others had seen and they too believed.
We held hands and wept somehow relieved.
We were not all alone we still had each other
Along with our families, our fathers and mothers.
~~~*~~~
I went to my friends and touched their sweet faces.
The memories that passed between so many places.
The years together, the fun we’d had
The times together that’d made all glad.
~~~*~~~
I said all the things I’d never before
Apologized to many for the pain they’d endured.
Classes were canceled, we were all sent home
Back to our families, no one alone.
~~~*~~~
My father was home he’d raced there to see me,
He hugged me so tight I couldn’t breathe freely.
I hugged him back no words were needed
So many times I’d left blessings unheeded.
~~~*~~~
I pulled from the hug to look at his face.
But not wanting to leave his saving embrace.
He was crying to Heaven, cursing the sky
Wondering why I, his baby, must die.
~~~*~~~
My tears they shed and fell to the ground
This green-blue orb on which our lives were found.
Death did not scare me for it was always there
But having no chance of that I did care.
~~~*~~~
I went to my room to look through my things
So many memories that empty joy brings.
I stared out my window and screamed in my head.
“I’m only sixteen why must I be dead?!”
~~~*~~~
Then all of a sudden the clouds turned to fire
The end was now here the Earth shall retire.
I ran to my father and we knelt in the grass.
Praying to God to save the Earth’s worthless mass.
~~~*~~~
We sat there on the ground gazing up to the sky
Knowing that soon we were both to die
We showed no fear our faces both blank
We watched the world’s end from a tall river bank.

Author notes
This is my first contest poem. My friends and I always talk about what we would do if we only had one day to live and normally I say spend lots of money, hang out, talk with my friends. But this is the more serious versions of that. This is what I'd do if I truly only had one more day on this planet.

It may have taken all of this to say what you felt, and over the required limit or not it is still very thought provoking and very beautiful. The sincerity of the write is evident, and for a first contest piece, it is a winner. Very well written taking me in from beginning till end. Great job!

This is a marvelous piece. It did go over the length requirements though. Still, it is very good.
