The Edge

It is a sad state of affairs when society brutalizes the innocent. It is a sign of its ultimate decay. A state that is truly thriving does not need to sacrifice the helpless for what it thinks is the preservation of the whole. This harolds the decline of a culture that is afraid that there will not be enough to go around. Pre-World War II Germany was in this condition and fell prey to the genetic supremist values of the Nazi party. It was part of what was used to  justify the murder of countless innocents. Post World War II, Capitalist America is possibly headed in this direction.

Capitalism forces everything to become a commodity. In this way, nothing is sacred or human. People are forced into making everything into a business venture to survive. This leads toward the corruption of human values to make money. Even the Church has become a business. Religion is reduced to a money making venture. People are reduced to the status of “good little consumers”. Communism is not an answer because under its pretexts people are stripped of their motivations and beliefs.

Religion and spiritual beliefs and pursuits should be a basic, intrinsic human rights. Food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education and love should also be basic, human, intrinsic rights. Socialism with modified capitalism, I believe is the answer.  Everyone should have their basic needs met through the contributions of the whole. This is with the realization that if anyone suffers in society it ultimately affects the whole of society.

Like a cancer, suffering spreads to infect everyone in some way. Crime is an example of this. Many people turn to stealing, or drugs and a life of crime because they are deprived, desperate and suffering. This harms all of us eventually. No matter how we try to separate ourselves. This is impossible. The rich need to realize this. Other peoples' suffering will catch up to them eventually. This has happened over and over again in history.

One example is the French Revolution. Marie Antoinette falsely believed that she was removed and insulated from the suffering of the commoners until she lost her head! All of this is also becoming true on a global level also. This is why there are revolutions. I pray we become wise enough as a people and a society to avoid this. We need to learn from the past and the present. The signs are all clearly there. We need to read them and act on them accordingly before it is too late.

Author notes

Religion and spiritual beliefs and pursuits should be a basic, intrinsic human rights. Food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, education and love should be basic, human, intrinsic rights. These are inalienable rights and are truths that should be self-evident!

Bravo, this is a fine piece. I agree with you. Everyone's basic needs should be met. Everything is too commericalized. Good luck to you in the contest.
