Lavender and golden green
the sweet forgotten colors
of a youthful dream turned decadent and sour
by the long turnings of the sun.
God knows the hope I held in life,
the oft remembered musings of a child,
To sing,
to dance,
to live and love
and be loved in return.
To take this life so freely given
and make of it a glorious song,
well worth remembering and often pondered,
in envy by all who knew it's passing;
This was the dream of a childish heart
which turned its cartwheels
knowing it should never tire or fade.
What ponderous weight is this
which like a millstone
'round my neck
bears me inexorably toward the ground?
Dreams die slowly, do they not?
And still my hopeful heart
in middle years yearns for the light
of life and love and happiness.
Sisyphus yet rolls his stone
up hill and down without an end.
Slowly, as days turned endlessly to night
I learned to reckon dark from light.
To emerge from Plato's cave into the
fully realized vision of the world,
to see things as they really are,
where hopes and dreams are folly's gold;
this too surely bears a fruit untasted,
of a life not wasted
thrown away
or trivial in it's own fair way.

This poem brings to mind some of the great poets, I love this style of writing, a slightly "aged" feel to it almost...I absolutely love it....thanks for sharing it,
Luck. -

Superb
A most intriguing write, indeed. I really liked your imagery, especially your reference to Plato's cave.*
Again, very well written.

Thank you for the kind review. And extra thanks for adding the link. There's a goldmine wating, the motherlode, of beauty expressed by all those great writers and thinkers of our past. The best of men (and women) awaits those who would delve into the world of ideas.

The line concerning the millstone seems very familiar, but I don't know where I've seen it before. Anyway, this is a very good poem, with pretty imagery. It's fun to read, with an uplifting ending from what seems to be a sorrowful situation.

This is such a beautiful poem.
It is a bit long for my tastes but still beautifully written, i especially loved the lines
"And still my hopeful heart
in middle years yearns for the light
of life and love and happiness."
