Amphoras

Note well these jars of ancient clay,
This lovely fired amphora
That came form Samos or Cathy
Or shops in buried Nineveh.

What balms, what wines, what cogent oils
Once filled them in the time lost Past
And from what galleys came these spoils,
All lost but for what dreams may grasp.

Here some were made in Tartary
And guarded by both sword and kris
Then brought to Rome and Galilee
And marts in Heliopolis.

What magic spells, ethereal,
Once poured from them so solemnly,
By priests in antique Israel
And sorcerers of Ptolemy?

Excellent! I love everything about this; the form, rhyme, rhythm and flow. An absolute sublime work to be proud of. Images like brushstrokes paint scenes inside my head as I read this. Bravo.
