How delicately you hover above wild blue lupine,
waiting your chance to settle in morning sunshine,
delicate wings flutter on the sweet summer air,
perchance you decide you shall linger there.
Petals of velvet neatly woven with care,
mother nature's splendour a picture fair,
swaying in the soft breeze, elegant and tall,
responding to echoes of a butterflies call.
Threatened with the loss of its habitat,
dry sandy places in oaks and all that,
the karner blue butterfly cries out in despair,
will no one take notice until I'm not there?
Due to development, man's selfishness and greed,
it gets so much more difficult for me to feed,
look carefully around you, enjoy while you can,
the karner blue butterfly being destroyed by man.
Author notes
Habitat loss is responsible for the decline of the Karner Blue throughout its range. The disappearance of habitat can be attributed to plant succession which creates shady conditions unsuitable for the growth of Wild Lupine; local "weed" control programs; development; and, in Pinery Provincial Park, the planting of pine trees in the 1940's.

This is beautifully penned and has a bittersweet tone to it. I hate to see any creature lose its' place on Earth. Your aabb rhyme scheme is great and you rhymed unusual words giving the piece origionallity. Well done!
Love,
Amera

Great pic! You can see the delicate hairs on body and wings, well described "petals of velvet" ! Very informative poem, clean rhyme. You convey both the delicacy of this beautiful insect and its host plant. Poignant "will no one take notice until I'm not there?" Additionally informative Author notes. One of far too many plights of the voiceless in a world where we have power to preserve and replenish, and have been entrusted with this great stewardship!
