Death's Portrait

Grim Reaper,
pale death,
cessation of life.

I have seen death's true face
in those who have met
it's challenge.

Struggle for breath,
withdrawal from surroundings.
Appetite leaves;
no need for speech.
Moving on to the next life,
shedding the bonds of earth.

Feeble slow gasps,
panickiness.
Envelopes the room
where death resides.

Day after day battle in fear,
fight to stay
on this terrestrial globe.
Eyes closed, frail frame trembles,
hands clutch blankets
in dark trepidation.

Fear of the unknown interferes
in this next life journey.

In the dark sitting alone,
taking this hand
into my own.
"It's alright, I am here."
Whispered words into this ear.
"I'll stay here and be with you,
Let it go, It's OK, dear."

Slow cessation
of breath comes first,
as she slips away from this earth.
Relaxed frame
now still in death,
leaves all behind
to see what comes next.

This is all part of death's portrait.
