I was fifteen years old
and more into rock and roll
than jazz, but one record
changed my outlook--Humphrey Lyttelton's
Bad Penny Blues. A thumping piano
laid down a cracking beat,
followed by a soaring trumpet
which wove jazz sorcery
about my captured heart.
This was 1956 and I had
never heard anything as exciting
as this--the raw voice
of America growling through
an Englishman's golden horn.

It was 20 years after that that I found him, both on Radio and in the flesh. He was as funny between tunes as he was presenting "Clue" and boy could he play!
