They followed us every single day
to catch the school bus a mile away.
Divided and straight was the asphalt road,
on either side yellow fields were sowed.
A pet, a pal, for each girl and boy
would romp and tail-wag to share our joy.
One by one, cars picked each of them off.
We witnessed smashed bodies. Their last cough
and soft whimpers we heard as they die
in our helpless arms. It made us cry.
The school bus parted us as if to be kind,
but life's hardest lesson was left behind.
Even today when I hear the squeal
of clenched brakes I cringe in dreadful chill.

Best of luck...
