I did it…I grew up
No more diapers
No sipper cup…
Mommy, thank you
After I crawled—then I walked
At first I mumbled
Then I talked
The more I played
The stronger I grew
I got my scars
But passed adolescence too
I’ve known you my whole life
Yet I never knew
Looking back, I see it was hidden
But there were many clues
You are an Artist
A sculptor of mine
Who chiseled and kneaded this form
I’m trying to polish me to let your work shine
I wanna thank you mommy
I had a chill when this thought came for free:
If I live for 300 years I won’t able to thank you enough
So a little voice said, “I’m gonna tell mommy…!”
Author notes
Every day should be mother's day in my head. Either way, this is dedicated to my mother. She's 76 now and has done the best that she could in raising her children. I'm moved beyond words... "Thank you again and again mommy".

So lovely, and yes, such sentiments should be shared with those who have invested so much into us... particularly as they age, and our time for bestowing such honor shortens. I loved that you used "mommy" instead of "Mother" or "Mom." It was so endearing and gave the speaker a vulnerability that the other terms of affection would have missed. A simply lovely tribute.

Big, delightful smiles here ten. Not only is your avatar (and name) great, now you've went and left me these touching comments. Thank you so very much. Yes, I STILL call my mother "mommy" (haha) - ahhh, what do you do, huh? You brought a huge smile to my face with your words and left me nodding in reflection. So true too: "particularly as they age, and our time for bestowing such honor shortens"...so well put.

Inspiring
We live in a world that seems to be so self consumed most of the time. We plod along through life thinking about our own troubles and worries and don't ever really give much thought to others.
I think it's wonderful that you took the time to appreciate your mother in that same way that she has probably appreciated you from the day you were born.
I can imagine that she was very proud to have received this wonderful gift from you, as has been echoed before in the comments, any mother would

Thank you so much for the reading here. It was great to have gotten your feedback on the piece I wrote for my mother. Yes, I agree with your observations of society these days - a real shame too that we have sunk to this state of 'self-consumption' in my view.
What you had to say made me smile and smiling is one of those things that I don't take for granted. I really appreciate the time you put into your comments on this.

This is a beautiful poem, really classic. I like how the language even seems to age through the piece. It makes me want to call my mom and tell her too. I think I will!

-
-
You are hilarious...Thanks a ton for you fun-spirited soul and (of course) this fabulous comment. Yeah, the age-progression thing was intentional but I didn't realize they no one remarked about it until you wrote it yourself (lol). Hmmm...? You're quite the sharp-eyed one, huh (smiling). Thanks again (and yeah, go tell your mommy).

Nice tribute to your mother Randy! She is a very special person and this poem is just wonderful to read about her! Mother's Day should be every day! GREAT WORK!!!

This is such a wonderful tribute to Mom's ..yours in particular! So many heartfelt thoughts, but these lines have to be my favorite!:
You are an Artist
A sculptor of mine
Who chiseled and kneaded this form
I’m trying to polish me to let your work shine
Excellent!

Thanks so much. My mother (so many mothers) has given me more than I could possibly re-pay. Funny enough, she always told my brothers and I, "You children draw so good. You are little artists". So, I find it humorous thinking about that in light of how she crafted us (but never made the connection regarding herself...hmmm?). I really appreciate this review.

-
I love the idea of a mother as a sculptor shaping her children, it 's so true, yet I bet most people don't think of it. Thanks for the insight.

-
Thank very much for this wonderful comment! Artistry is in the eye of the beholder, huh? And a mother's love impacts how she molds us (to me)...

I am a brand new granny...
my first born delivered unto me a sweet little grandson
born on Valentine's day..and just recently he turned
one years old in 2007, and when he raised his arms,
and said mama...to me, my heart melted as if it were
the very first time...the echoes of love returned to mine.
very touching poem, feasted our hearts.
ears/Seattle loved it! cleverly done, and
smartly written!

Wow..this is such a wonderful comment. I don't know what to say? This is my mom and I love her so much. What else needs to be said, huh? Thanks so, so much. I'm really touched...

I Love This!
I am 27 years old, and you know what? I still call my mother, Mommy.. And furthermore I am proud of it. I have 2 kids of my own, and I still refer to her that way. She loves me, she knows I am odd, and she accepts me the way that I am.
Mothers are so special, no matter what they can't help but want to be artist, and usually make some pretty wonderful masterpieces! Like you Dear Poet! Your Mommy created more than one precious gem stone! Exquisitely written.. Tell her I said thank you for inspiring such a wonderful child, to become such an amazing adult and poet!! Bravissimo, Bravo!
