Yesterday's Child

Yesterday’s child was born in greed,
insatiably hungry with monetary need.
It plucked the fruit from the orchard bough
and all the trees hang empty now,
Mourn not for yesterday’s child.

Yesterday’s child stole from today
the treasures it lost yesterday,
burned the forests, polluted the seas,
poisoned the earth, left leafless trees,
Weep not for yesterday’s child.

Yesterday’s child stood coldly by
as hungry thousands began to die,
though food aplenty it had in store,
harvest for profit it grew, and more,
Grieve not for yesterday’s child.

Yesterday’s child dulled mountain streams,
ravished tomorrow’s precious dreams,
let fellow creatures fall and die,
destroyed the blue of warming sky,
Yearn not for yesterday’s child.

Yesterday’s child plundered the earth,
ripped young from womb before their birth,
and those it bore were born in greed
insatiably hungry with monetary need,
The shame of yesterday’s child.

Yet come tomorrow’s icy dawn,
I’ll weep for those, who, yet unborn,
will never leave uncaring womb,
their heritage, an age of doom,
For I was yesterday’s child.

    Superb

A very fine write, indeed. Imagery, rhythm and rhyme are just fine. This poem reminded me of an old song called: "Yesterday", and when I went to look it up I found this storey with the same title as your poem and here's a link to the storey:

Here's info on the song: "Yesterday", by the Beatles:

I appreciate your comments and thank you for them.

Sometimes, we, the older generation, in criticising the younger generation, forget the problems we have left for our children.

I shall endeavour to return the favour. :-)

Thank you for your comment Lightening Strikes

Thank you for taking the time to comment of my poem.

Don't be too sad, with new life comes new hope, although at the time of writing the poem I didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I shall endeavour to return the favour. :-)
