My Own Private Worship

Off the beaten path I find my rock,
my own special pew for my own special worship,
my moment to believe,
my moment of proof.
And I spy the Holy grandeur
of mountain, valley, and life.
Far below the machines of man
trickle along the gray, paved highway,
but up here it is so very clear
they're just metal specks in
God's glorious heart.
The mountains flood my eyes
with waves of yellow and red,
an unrelenting pulse of beauty in death,
soothed by the crystal sky
and marshmallow clouds.
I clench the cool dirt in my hand
and consider the mass of this world,
the volume of earth I rest on,
and the might any creator must have.
I appreciate the invisible gravity,
the unfelt force,
that keeps me on this rock,
that keeps me in this perfect world.
Now I see the eagle gliding,
resting on wind without motion,
carelessly taking in this same splendid view,
without knowing the beauty she adds herself.
The love of the sun warms my cheeks
and lights this loaded canvas,
it ignites silver sparks in the rambling river,
snaking its way through the valley below.
I stand to leave and grasp a rock,
tossing it far from this ledge.
Hardly a dent, hardly a splash,
on this scene of true magnificence.
I take one more stone and I give it a smile,
before sliding it into my pack.
I make strides for home,
taking that small piece of Heaven
along for the ride.
Now I can believe.
Now my Faith is stone.
For only a God, a true God,
could create such bountiful perfection.

Author notes

This is one I wrote about a year ago over on SharePoetry and it remains one of my favorites. I have others on more "traditional" prayer, but for me these moments in nature are often the best kind of prayer. I believe that Faith and prayer can take many forms, and I love how poetry can reflect that so well. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do... Thanks!

Lovely prayer. It feels like it came truly from the heart. You seem to have put on paper a prayer that stays in your heart a lot and not just to write for poetry purposes. The flow is good and the content is great. I hope more will think about praying when reading this. None of us do enough I'm sure. All in all a good write. Pen on...~Poo~
