We pay taxes and work hard,
yet it seems too much to ask
if we demand to celebrate
the country’s patron, St George’s date.
Suddenly everything is bitter
and nothing is making it sweeter
when the rich councils won’t pay
to put up a decent display.
We want to take the day off
bring out the flags and show off
that we are the English community
without being called a liability.
I suggest we take the streets
and make them listen to our needs
of celebrating our present and past
with joy and freedom at last.
