Masterpiece

Sweet Cupid sets his aim upon a Grace
To celebrate the joy that Spring has brought
While Venus waits for Mercury to chase
The dragons from the field wherein they fought
The Goddess of the Spring is spreading flowers
As Zephyrus makes Chloris blush for Shame
The artist shows the depths of Nature's powers
And with his noble patrons plays a game
Five hundreds years have passed since paint was wet
The colours now more subtle than when new
Yet still admirers wait without regret
A masterpiece will always draw a queue
An allegory of a Christian theme
Or maybe just the painting of a dream?

DLC-Jem told me there were folk on AP, to which I am fairly new, who still wrote sonnets, and that you were one of the best. She was right - you write with a lovely, light touch.

    Indeed.

Unfortunately, many tourists have a list; pay a quick visit and tick that. I think that the humanist in Botticelli is as real as the humanist in Milton in Paradise Lost. Certainly, the painting of a dream with eyes wide open. The narrative of the alleged mythological interpretation by contemporaries is related fairly well.
This poem is more satirically sophisticated than some might think.

This is a beautiful sonnet penned in perfect decasyllable and depicting the painting Primavera well. You are a wonderful story teller and I think this sonnet is better than you told me.

    Love.

It would be a very good comment poem, but it doesn't stack up to the competition here. It started out as a double sonnet but I couldn't get the balance between the two halves as I wanted them.
