Old Soldier

I'll remember you old soldier
every year and in between
I'll look in your eyes and see
the heartaches you have seen

I'll see you marching down the street
with medals on your chest
Of the people in this country
you soldiers are the best

I'll never forget what you did
on those shores so far away
Old soldier, let me honour you
on this your special day

So we'll all stand by the street side
and wave our country's flag
I know why you look away
The humble don't like to brag

But we owe so much to you
and to those who came before
and especially to those
who came not home at all

They say that on the past don't dwell
but we are forever in your debt
and today we must say to ourselves
'LEST WE FORGET'

Author notes

I've always wanted to write something about Anzac Day, its always been so special to me and for years I had the honour of marching in Anzac Day parades playing my coronet. Hopefully next year, with a bit of practice, I'll be able to write a better one.

Excellent work. I'm glad to see patriotism isn't a sin over there like it has become in America.

No its not a sin over here, Aussies are very patriotic, especially on ANZAC Day. Thank you for saying this is excellent. I showed my Dad who really loved it which made me very proud, he even offered a few small suggestions which I took him up on, and changed the wording just a little.

Well I think this is just lovely, it speaks volumes for us who have no idea what it would have been like but we can still pay our respects for those who gave us the lifestyle we enjoy today. I am so glad to meet you and so proud to be an Aussie just like you Love, C
