The Tear of a Petticoat
As I tear another piece of my petticoat
to make yet another bandage,
I jump at the fire around me
throwing myself onto the wounded soldier
in my care.
"I'm so sorry," I cried,
yet I knew he didn't know I was there,
his mind fetid with fever
crazed with the memories of his sweetheart
whom he had left at home.
Cannon fire in the background
thundered around us
as the ground shuddered
as if in fear
and men bellowed orders.
Another tear of the petticoat
and another hand falls to my side
as my soldier succumbs
to this horrid, bloody war
that has torn a country asunder.

Oh how I wish I had seen this contest. You detail the horror of war from a view rarely touched upon by others. Truth is.... in war, young men die and there's nothing anyone can do to change that. Excellent presentation my friend.

Leo Long

Ah mom, this is INSANELY amazing! The civil war is so interesting to me, and it's incredible how you could write such a good poem about it. I like how it's not explaining how this this and this happened, but showing the emotions of how someone taking care of the soldiers went through and felt. Amazing <33

I like this very much, you don't name any emotions, but there are several embedded in your images. Well done, it is nice to see a new poem from you.

patty its so great to see you writing! I have missed your words!
A heart rending poem about war even though it is historical.

-
good to see you writing

i love historical romances and therefore have read much about the Civil War. novels go into such detail and i've learned more by reading my historical romance novels than i ever did in school.
your words caught the mood of war in a brief yet personal way. good for you

Patricia!

It's both a sad and an intriguing part of our history, and a war unlike any we have ever been in. It's aftermath still plays a part in life today as some feelings die hard. No matter if Blue or Gray, the dying is an American tragedy.

excellent poem,

Good luck in the contest

Interesting
I've read some nurses diaries' and that of a few women spies and soldiers that did the same for their comrades when they fell. Often I wondered what poetry they would pen on the subject, but few had the chance. Good luck in the contest!
