A Better Place

I look over the horizon as the cannons fire from behind me
The enemies blood watering the battle field
My comrades hitting the ground one after another

The women who tend to the wounded have their hands full

I stagger forward gun loaded ready to kill

Just as I raise my gun to fire a shot rips through me

I slowly hit the ground bleeding profusely

Looking at the setting sun as I lay dying

A smile appears on my face because I know I'm going to a better place

    Interesting Perspective

Some soldiers may have felt that way early on in the war, but later they didn't. If you ever get the chance, "Company Aytch" by Sam Watkins is a great read on the experiences of the Civil War soldier from his journal. Good luck in the contest!
