There I was the day you came
when sky turned real blue,
clouds shone white all given,
the sun itself was new.
Those days we nearly lost you
saw the whole world smash and tumble down,
but Compassion spread its miraculous breath;
our lives still in - you are around.
Such hearted nature with no shadows
easy laugh, clean beaming grin.
we never want invitation back-
to imagine life which you're not in...
and we still play chess,
still we lark about,
we run-have-fun like brothers
in loving knowledge with no doubt;
intelligent, vivacious and handsome...
so of my self, you only one.
Never to be otherwise,
my heart is full: you are my son.
Author notes
Dedicated to my Son Joseph
We experienced close encounter with cruel meningitis and escaped, nothing short of miraculously, unscathed. Many are not so lucky and my heart goes out to them. I have to also highly praise the such humbling dedication of the nurses at The Birmingham Children's Hospital in the UK, to whom I believe we owe his life.

Thanks.
Your telling me! There was nothing to be done accept to not get in the way. Full life support machine and plugged into the lot, with two nurses 24hrs/day. The great thing was that you just knew, that they were doing absolutely everything possible to keep him alive. Nothing to add but being there as a prayer and it all worked.

Sounds like quite a tough situation, and these do tend to pull people together. I'm sure your son will appreciate this. Thanks for entering

Beautiful
This is so well written, simple and coming from the heart. Very emotional read and a beautiful dedication. (And your commas perfect too!)

It's funny how each poet will see this from a different angle. I love my babies, but this makes me think more (and hope) of how my parents might think of me..
I wonder, are they grateful I've survived? Is it possible for them to truly be grateful when they don't really know what it is I have survived? Would they praise me for saving myself instead of relying on others to do it for me?
I donno (caught me in a mood)
this is touching, though, it is nice to see such gracious appreciation for the gift of your child and the people who kept him in your life.

Yes, I think we move around in our feelings depending on how we are considering them. When we stop and come to more centred and deep feeling, the paraphernalia begins to dissolve. People can be more or less moved to do this at different times I guess. Also I think you've touched on the close connection between love and knowledge in which I do feel there is a dependency. Perhaps though, the knowledge part isn't as we necessarily think of it in its details, more of a knowing in the heart regardless of particularities.
Do you think?
Thank you for your comment

This is a beautiful piece of work my friend, the compassion to Joseph is shining through your words, I remember when you read this to me and how I felt.
As a nurse, I am well aware of that balance of trust when caring for the critically ill, I have seen it many times and also had personal experiences too, which has also made me take a look at life and how tenuous it all seems to us.
I think your words cover it all and I have bookmarked this piece.

Yes, I guess you would have been actively swimming in what I mentioned in the notes as the 'humbling dedication'. Thank God people like you do that! Sol

So much of the poetry I see is focused on the negative parts of life that it is really refreshing to see a poem that expresses thanks. It is an eloquent reflection of gratitude and love--something I would like to see more often (and something I, personally, will have to work for. The negative is easier). Lovely work.
In line twelve, though, you have a "your" where you need a "you're." Might want to fix that.

Thank you very much for your kind and positive comment Orual and also for the timely pointer!

I agree with your sentiments about the neg. and pos. I think we all have to work for it, but with it, work can be made easy. All the best to you and thanks again, Sol
