Expiration Date

Brothers say they love me
as they touch me,
hands upon my skirt…
beneath my skin,
settling in their sin—
the forever clinging.

Now Mommy sinks away—
a black shadow turning gray—
slinking down an alley.
“Translucent soon,” she cries to me;
“And Sister, too,” she says.

But nothing seems to suffice
as the lies clog our eyes;
Daddy leaves me behind
as well, no longer finding
what we seek in others…
others that we love?

Down I sink, and up I rise;
It is a never-ending cycle
that perverts my mind
and all it gives birth to,
running a pattern into
the yellow wallpaper of my life.

Rocks in my pockets,
weight heavier than
the memory of tragedy.
Beneath the water,
down I go,
lungs burning hotter.
Now, blissfully, I expire.

Author notes

Read a novel by Virginia Woolf and decided to look up her biography. It wasn't pretty. She was abused by two older brothers, lost both parents and a sister she was very close to. After dealing with depression (possibly manic depressive) and possible dementia until her mid-fifties, she committed suicide by weighting her coat down with rocks and wading out into a river. Her life...and death...inspired this poem.

    Wow, scared me for a minute there. I was all like, WTF?!

    But yeah...glad it's not personal. I did not know that about Ms. Woolf, either, so thanks for the information.

    Very well written...in a creepy, incestuous, suicidal way. *nod*

    Lerves.

        Hehe...speakin' of anime, they restarted the Inuyasha series. Episode 1 was on and I got all nostalgic and sentimental...I think it means that they're gearing up to release new episodes. *waves flag very covertly*

        But back to reality! I do have to agree with you. *nod*

        Lerves.

            Yeah, me either. They have all the episodes online where you can watch them for free. Er...not that I do that or anything. *looks around ceiling very casually while blushing*

            Hehe...good times.

    you are amazing... I really liked the imagery in this... I have never been able to write a poem based on anyone but myself or my friends close to me so props for that!

      Why 'fank you! This is one of the only ones I've managed to write that I even remotely like, so I understand what you mean.
