At 14 I knew a man,
brave and powerful and strong.
A brave man that knew no fear,
that never did you wrong.
A man so great, with so many feats,
Like lifting a truck off the road
Defending a brothel from a biker gang
And following his own religious code.
The man once bit by a taipan snake.
The man the size of a car
The man so large people would stare
My dad, my father, my star.
At 14 I knew these things
As I know the sun will rise.
At 15 though, times had changed
And life sure had a surprise.
The man became small, thin, weak.
A shell of his former self.
By 15 he couldn't go for a leak
And do it by himself.
In the last months he barely ate.
His skull could be seen through skin
And the only thing I wished and wanted
Was someone to just finish him
But still he suffered and I watched him die
As his cancer grew and grew
Until that blessed spring morn
When finally it was through.
Nine months I watched his cancer war
Nine months he suffered 'til free.
Nine months it took from kid to man
Nine months no child should see.

I loved this - the ending especially was very powerful - reminded me of my own work in a way (not saying mine is nearly as powerful as yours!)
