Daisy May

All the way from Blackpool Beach
where she usually treads the sands
I'd trained this filly of
some thirteen hands
appearing at many a race grandstand
picking up rosettes at each.

I thought that she would stand a chance
so to Kentucky we embarked
chartering our flight
with the race held firmly in our sight
From Manchester we depart.

Now, perhaps I should mention
that my 'little' Daisy
had never flown before, of course she'd
flown around the race track
and flown around the shore
but they were on a very much firmer floor.
She also liked Candy Floss it was
her favorite treat. A little vice I know
but kept her on her feet.
From out of the tiny window Daisy saw
the clouds and mistaking them for Candyfloss
her hooves began to pound.
Unable to pacify her as I hadn't thought to Floss
This didn't help Daisies state
and she began to get quite cross.
A suggestion was made by the cabin crew
to fashion a Candy Floss stick
cleverly made of cotton wool
As sometimes the sight of this sugary ball
was all that she needed to be happy and calm
So I fed her sugar cubes to get her fix
and the candy floss stick did the trick.

Thank goodness that is over
it really was quite fraught
now were going to be in clover as
to Louisville we've been brought.

So lets get on with the race.
Daisy May is lined up amongst the runners
the thoroughbreds of the day.
Arabian Steeds the best in the world
are all here on the first Saturday in May
THEY'RE OFF and Daisy is in the lead!
those thirteen hands are in good stead
and all of the sugar she's been fed
my Daisy May gathers some speed.
Leaving the others way behind
Daisy May delivers a blind
over the winning line she goes
having me on my toes.
for in order for her to win the race
i was the one who kept the pace
running on the rails was I
holding the cotton wool stick on high
i hugged the rails as good as any
I doubt there would have been as many
could outrun all those worthy steeds
as I must for both  our needs.
I thanked the jockey who rode Daisy May
and mused perhaps he may come our way, some fine day.
Covered in Roses was Daisy and I
when we went to Kentucky and learnt how to fly.
Can't wait to get back on that Blackpool beach
where Candy Floss is well in reach!!
where the air is 'fresh' and fills our noses
and we can stop and smell the roses!!
(amongst the plentiful rich manure)

Author notes

For those that do not know Candy Floss is either pink or white whipped up strands of sugar onto the end of a stick...got at Blackpool along with Blackpool rock (again a sugar stick) Blackpool is also renowned for having Donkeys on the beach where children ride them. We have a Derby too and not far from where I live is the famous Grand National but this is a race over jumps. Really enjoyed doing this poem as I just dropped by to say Hi to you Cathy..Inspired by yourself and Wayne (Flight 113)...Daisy May is another of my flights of fancy (see Fancy) thanks for reading Hugs Lib x x x

Is Candy Floss the same thing as Cotton Candy? It sounds the same. Anyway, this is such a great write. It's very cute. I really enjoyed reading it.

Oh libi, you had my imagination running riot, I will always think of you and Daisy May when I go to Blackpool. I can just see you taking off down the prom with a bundle of candy flosses in your hand and daisy and a whole load of donkeys charging from pier to pier behind you. "Fancy That LOL" If you should just look up, I will be waving a flag from the top of the tower. haha1
