Et in Venustas ego.

Epigraph:
Beauty is to be found on a stage, or a page.
Nowhere else is there something so wonderfully given
to imagination; besides religion, of course.

though Wilde's and Joyce's roses and portraits hung from
the trees in our garden,
one act of kindness
and one act of desperation
made our infatuation smother the son;
our light and our love became soil.

though waiting made us grow ill,
one act of insincerity
brought an ugly god to our doorstep,
dumb and blind demons were soon behind.

though fire and equations both licked at the
pages of our notebook, we left no burden of proof on others,
we provided it ourselves.

you gesture to the universe
and i see stories;
i gesture to the ground
and you see stars.

we were in paradise;
mischief and endless summer
only reigned after
god left us to our own devices.

after god left, there was beauty.
so much.
but after beauty leaves, what will we have?

Quod erat demonstrandum
Et in Arcadia ego

Author notes

Et in ___ ego is Latin. it means even in ___ noun, i am present. Arcadia is the equivalent to paradise and venustas means beauty. this has a bunch of allusions, 5 dollars to the first one to get them all.

    I didn't pick up on many of them either. Where's Nate?

    The universe-ground stanza was my favorite... & probably the only one I really enjoyed.

    I could see you were going for something in this poem, but I just didn't get it.

    & to top it all off, you went over the 25 line limit. :[

    i honestly picked up on none of the allusions, but i still like this a lot. The ending was cool. without the translation, i would have been so lost with the ending. haha.
    i'm surprised nobody has commented on this yet.
    one of the better ones in the contest-- out of the ones i've read, that is. good luck.
