Letter # 887 - During the Battle of the Bulge

Letter # 887 from Elaine to Foster - This letter is written the first day of the Nazi offensive that begins the Battle of the Bulge. You can hear the anxiety in Elaine’s writing because she does not know where Foster is. She knows the First Army has suffered casualties but she doesn’t know if Foster is with the First Army.

Hello my beloved,

I haven’t received any letters since your Dec. 3rd which I received last Monday. It arrived in record time. I hope I get some mail soon as I miss your words of devotion.

...Things are very much the same with me. I miss and love you so much. Oh! If only we could have Victory and an end to all this misery. War news today upset me, as the Germans have put on a counter-attack against the First Army. I become so upset when I hear such news Darling boy of mine, I’m so worried about you. It’s such a terrific strain just waiting and worrying. It’s a darn shame that we have to have wars. No one benefits in any way., Only means sadness for all.

I just dream of peace and once more living a normal life. It seems so long since I’ve really lived. I guess it will be as difficult for my rehabilitation. But dearest together we will make it. Together we will never fail but enjoy life’s fullest happiness. God bless you and send my soldier safely home to me. I love you above all.

Until tomorrow all my love.

Always,
Your devoted bride

Elaine

Author notes

This is one of hundreds of letters I inherited as the daughter of a WWII veteran. I have just begun to publish these letters. This is a huge undertaking for me - one that I have wanted to do for decades.
