Introduction to Elaine and Foster's Story

Elaine and Foster’s Story

INTRODUCTION

I was “commissioned” to write a book about my parent’s love and endurance during World War II.  My commission was handed to me by my Mom during endless nights of her reading and rereading my father’s letters to me. That was many years ago.

So here I am today. I’ve found the boxes full of these letters resting in peace in my basement. Some of the letters are loose; some are neatly wrapped in brown paper and tied neatly with 60 year old cord. It’s almost shameful to cut the cord and free the letters. But I am doing this - looking at the letters, that is. I am trying to do what my Mom, in her grief over my father’s death and in her own addiction to rye whiskey, wanted me to do.

I'm not sure what my commission really is. I don’t know what I will find. I do know that I’ve carried these hundreds of letters with me wherever I moved to. The are like precious relics - sacred items. Perhaps opening them will them will open me up to new revelations about my parents or new insights into my own life.

I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and that all things work to the good for those whose hearts are right. I guess it’s my commission to see what meaning I can find in these letters. I hope they will work for my good. I hope others too will benefit from these letters.

Author notes

This is the intro to a collection of love letters my mom and dad wrote to each other during WWII.

Wow,Jo, I feel like I must be related to you or something like that, as my Dad and Mom were living then, and if Mom had kept Dad's letters I suppose I would be asked to the same..Quite a write her luv, I anticipate reading with interest. It will be something different than what we are used to reading..Perhaps a journal like journey for your Mom and Dad...Bravo for the spirit to carry on the message!

    Just begin Jo...

This reminds me of the book Tom Brokaw wrote, "The Greatest Generation." Perhaps, you could check out his book and while reading see where your heart leads you. A good time to come out with a book is before a Holiday, say Valentines Day since these letters are love letters. If you haven't published yet, that is.

told me when publishing a book and looking for a publisher. Don't send the entire book each time and just the first couple of chapters. He use to, and may still, set aside a specific time each day to dedicate to his book writing of 5 to 7 a.m... He may still answer emails sometimes. Not sure.

I think my stopping on this poem "Returning the Favor" to your beautiful comment on my poem, "Breakfast With God" is a Godwink to return the favor to yourself completing what is important in your life to complete.

SELF MATTERS INCLUDES JO and if completing this commissioned mission of sharing letters special delivered to you from your mom and dad's hearts to share with others. Just begin and looks like you are and so you have. God Bless this endeavor of yours inside and out and throughout.

Thanks so much for the encouragement!

This time of the year I really start thinking about this project. You are right - If I just did one a day during the summer months, that would be a great deal of work.

Again, than you so much for the encouragement! It is like a little push from the Holy Spirit to get me to get to work.

Love and hugs today and always.
