The Things I Do For Love

A black cherub haunts me
arrows tipped with malice
I gave you my heart and all I got
was a "return to sender"

The cruelest kiss
the most lonely love
the darkened desire
of a woman scorned

Love is not freely given
but neither is it taken.
It can be earned and lost,
and twisted and dying.

An angelic obsession burns me
its ecstasy brimming with hope
I surrendered all I had to you
Only to find I had nothing to give.

You said you wanted beauty
so I starved myself skinny
you said you wanted joy
so I smiled serpentinely
You wanted stability
so I worked to weakness

You wanted the ultimate loyalty
the dream love, the Shakespeare sonnet,
the contemporary lovers' lane

So now I hang at the noose
this poem fallen to the floor.

Do you love me yet?

Author notes

Title inspired by a line from a bookseries, "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin.

Point of the poem: An ideal love is an impossible love. There is no ideal; and dreams too high to come true taht are imposed on those around you only lead to despair and disappointment.
