One Frosty Morn.

One frosty morn in April they left their dorms for class.
Amidst the blooming of Daffodills and Lilacs their time had come to pass.
Among the halls of education one man came,
and before the day was over none would forget his name.

Did we send our children to class
only to fall beneath blood and shattered glass?
I think not, for ere this day in Virginia mountains,
death can never be proud as others learn again.

Would God have begotten one such as this?
As we hide from the sounds of gunfire, we are still his.
The pain comes and goes as we look to the fall.
The rain is God's tears for us all.

One frosty morn in April the sun still shines.
Their memories will linger always in our minds.
For youth that was lost angels mourn in travail.
But we are the Virginia Tech Hokies and we will prevail.

Author notes

This piece is in memory of the students who were killed on April 16, 2007. May they live in honor and may we never again repeat that day. Here is to you Nikki Giovannie. It is now two years since the tragedy and this spring we have had a lot of rain. So too tragedy always come. The reference we look to the fall has to do with new students coming in and accomplishing the goals of those who perished.

A contest entry

I believe that whenever a tragedy such as this the rain is indeed Gods tear for us all.

    Great write here

So sad it was and will be again unless this country takes the students all the students seriously and make sure all are part of a healthy lifestyle in the schools . So often the staff ignores it when one is being teazed or ridiculed only today this can no longer be .

I too got chills down my spine while reading. Wow you really touched my heart and soul with this one. Such a sad day in America one that should and I hope will not be repeated. But we live in such a scary and evil world now, I really worry about my Jasmine and our youth growing up in it. Thanks for sharing this heartfelt piece.

That gave me chills. I know it is hard when the anniversary of such traumatic events comes around. Thank you for writing this haunting tribute to the beautiful youths that left us so tragically and violently that day. The evil in the world is so very difficult to comprehend. In fact, I cannot. The Light will prevail over darkness and ignorance!
