Little Things

A man who hungers for the adulation of millions
Often puts little importance on the praise of one
But that one love often becomes all that matters
When the fights and the days of his life are done.

Little things like romance are a petty distraction.
Love taken for granted; vanity none can endure.
And at the end, in a lonely room full of trophies,
He finally learns how big the little things were.

Very poignant, and sad. Touches a raw nerve in all of as at times I think.

  • A great reminder to appreciate the "little" things in your life. A very powerful reminder that many of us can use from time to time. Nice write! Patty

  • Humm,..quite an intriguing piece you have portrayed here my friend....thanks for sharing it and good luck in my contest..

Simply said, and a complex vision. Truly, the things that matter can be eclipsed by busy concerns in the outside world. It is so very important to remain focused on the people who give joy to your life; the presence of a friend is worth more than all the trophies in the world. Love may be taken for granted, but love will not diminish.

    Wise words.

Mark your words ooze truth and wisdom that we all need to ingest. This reads like something I'd put on my fridge under "words to live by". Solid writing as always.

    Cheers,

    Henri

Ah yes...at the end of the proverbial "day", one never says "I wish I would have worked more" rather than spending time with people and doing things that really matter in the long run. Well said, my friend. As usual you do know how to connect with the universal consciousness. xoxo suzy PS If you have a moment, I would love your comments on my lastest haiku's...been very inspired by what I see here.

    Deep!

It's all about priorities and temporal values.

    Loved it!

Incidently, I reccomend one of mine named, "Eternal." I believe you'll like this one as it is something like yours (just a touch more verbose! Ha!) Yours - the Ocer'!)

Wonderful Mark! I couldn't have said it any better myself. It can be so hard finding the right person, but when you do - ah! And suddenly all of your fights against a hard cruel world are YOUR fights, plural, not yours, singular. That and suddenly you find answers. God bless you, big guy! Here's hoping we both find that girl! - ocerus

      Hey Oce,

Thanks for the comment. This is actually about someone who puts more importance on career than love and ends up alone, wondering if it his collection of trophies was worth the trade. Pretty sad really. I'll be sure to check out the poem you referenced. Thanks.

"Love taken for granted; vanity none can endure."

You've got that right, Scribe. How many take these things for granted, assuming they'll always be there...when, in reality, they ought to understand what a blessing it is that they were ever there to begin with, let alone that they still remain. As always, re~Mark~able work, my Friend. Wanda

Well said, eloquently written, so very true! Maybe its in the Spring air, or the planets have aligned themselves in just such a way. But it seems everyone is in an introspective frame of mind. Its funny because just last night I went on a vacation to that little Greek Island you took me on years ago. Today I went for a hike in the park and came across a Lab named Molly. I smiled and thought about your Molly. I came home and the first thing I see on the screen is you! I do hope all is well in your world. Take every care,
    Michelle

What a nice story! Thanks for remembering Molly. She actually lives with my parents. My new dog is Charlie, a half German shepherd, half mystery Claudia and I rescued at the pound. He's a lovebug but full of mischief. He ate one of my palm trees the other day. He even ate the legs of a wooden ladder, which detracts from the safety somewhat since ladders aren't supposed to have sharpened legs. lol

I hope you're enjoying spring as much as I am. I'm rollicking in the backyard with Charlie right now. His new hobby is chasing bugs. (Fearless hunter. lol)

Thanks for cheering me up. Always great to hear from you.
