Ah, happiness doth court the light,
and so we deem the world is gay,
that all the world is good and bright,
for this is all we see each day.
Yea, even in the darkest fears,
we see a shining silver line,
a glisten, shining through our tears,
that all things shall one day align.
Yes, Happiness shines forth for us,
and this is all we care see,
and so convinced then are we thus
that this is all the world can be.
But misery doth hide aloof!
'tis not shown by the blazing sun!
We see it not, nor seek its proof,
and so we deem that there is none...
and so we deem the world is gay,
that all the world is good and bright,
for this is all we see each day.
Yea, even in the darkest fears,
we see a shining silver line,
a glisten, shining through our tears,
that all things shall one day align.
Yes, Happiness shines forth for us,
and this is all we care see,
and so convinced then are we thus
that this is all the world can be.
But misery doth hide aloof!
'tis not shown by the blazing sun!
We see it not, nor seek its proof,
and so we deem that there is none...
Author notes
This is NOT intended to be of any sort of brilliance; I merely needed to write something, for the sake of writing it. It is based off of a quote from Herman Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener:
"Ah, happiness courts the light, and so we deem the world is gay. But misery hides aloof, and so we deem that misery there is none."
Please tell me what you think

Xel, you have penned yet another aweseome piece right here! I love your work and I always love reading the new things you come up with. I hope to catch you around the site more often. I hardly get to talk to you anymore! -Liz

Hey Dan
I think that both Melville's original quote, and your expansion on it, are both brilliant.
I've been convinced for a long time that what this world needs is a lot less poets and more good men and women to help with this crazy world of ours. But I would amend that, with you as an exception. Your poetry teaches, sometimes admonishes, and sometimes makes us smile.
I'm very privileged to have run across your work, and you! Hope all is well with you. I've just received my very first retirement check so I'm officially retired as of today.LOL
Best Regards,
