The Welcoming

Wings whisper in a wash of love.
Sunlight dapples blossoms
letting colors resonate in the first blush
of morning. She unfolds from sleep,
brushes the dust of the last web of dreams
from her eyes, greets the rising light.

She takes our hearts and wraps
each one in the delights and pastel
colors of the love that spills
dances from her heart as she breathes
life’s subtle scents, and her hands
caress the offerings of each day’s joy.

Blessed are we, who can trace
her footsteps' impressions in the sandy
shores of our hearts' grace. She has
brought us gifts of butterfly laughter,
humming bird brilliance and flowered
the paths of our life in blossoming petals.

Share with me this day of celebration;
Dance with me in jubilation --
as we sign with joy, the day of her birth,
wish her all the blessings
we can lay upon her hearth --  knowing
we are happy every day she is in our hearts.

That beautifully expresses the love you have for whoever this gracious lady is. I love it.

    V2: Should be 'breathes.'
You need a comma between 'scents' and 'and.'

V3: Should be footsteps' if you are talking about more than one footstep.
Should be hearts' if you are talking about the heart of more than one person.
Should be 'paths of our lives' if you are talking about many lives taking separate paths or 'path of our lives' if you mean many lives following one path.

V4: Re 'sign with joy'--Is she deaf, or are you talking about signing the birthday card?

I agree with breathes, spelling error. I don't know why you put a comma between scents and and. I didn't even learn how to use punctuation till I was thirty and most of the rules have to many exceptions to make sense to me.

I understand the need for the plurals -- consistency in number.

"sign with joy" she is not deaf but I want that feeling in there, the sense of silence and yes also the signing of the birthday card. Call it poetic license in this case.

I ought to hire you. You're good. Thanks
      Love, Tom B.

Hi, Tom! Here's the reason for the comma.

In English, there are two kinds of phrases, dependent clauses (sentence fragments) and independent clauses (complete sentences).

When an independent clause follows a conjunction, such as 'and,' a comma must precede the conjunction. When a dependent clause follows a conjunction, no comma is needed.

        For example:

        1. I bought Fancy Feast for my cat, but she refused to eat it.
('She refused to eat it' is a complete sentence. It contains a subject pronoun (She) and a verb (refused).)

        versus

        2. I bought Fancy Feast for my cat but forgot to put it in her bowl.
('Forgot to put it in her bowl' does not contain a subject noun of any sort; it only has the verb 'forgot.')

So, in your poem, you have:

She takes our hearts and wraps
each one in the delights and pastel
colors of the love that spills
dances from her heart as she breathes
        life’s subtle scents,

(This, by the way, seems a little too long. You might consider breaking it up into two sentences, if you can.)

        and her hands
caress the offerings of each day’s joy.

('Her hands caress the offerings of each day's joy' is a complete sentence.)

        I hope that helps!

it is funny, that I who am so analytical, do language and writing so much by feel. I can rarely step back and look analytically at my own writing until years have gone by. Poems erupt, are born, take me over and write themselves. Little happens that is cold, logical or weighed. Instead, it burns and dances it way through my soul and drains upon the page from my fingers. It is, almost, a gift to have someone like yourself provide a safe harbor of correctness that clarifies my grammer and parses the sentences so that everyone has greater access to the wonder of my heart. So yes, I thank you. Deeply and completely with all my heart, I cannot thank you enough.

          Love,
          Tom B.

Thanks, Sandra. You know I do little. I only offer the people in the world around me to honor themselves and have respect for each other's dignity. In our hearts, given that we truly hold the world in the Light, we see how blessed we are by each person's life.

Me too, I've missed you too, and count myself blessed to read such a lovely dedication. There are only a few people here that cross over to my "real" thoughts, and you are most definitely on that list, and this here's why..
Peace, my friend, and happy birthday Lynda.

Thanks, my friend. I am finally learning the truth of what my grandmother taught me. Good manners and gracious behavior, in the end, create the greatest good will, because they benefit and and provide openess for the most people. It also allows me to listen to people and see the best in them. I am blessed by all of your kind thoughts.
      Love, Tom B.
