All these people, living alone,
Each one wakes in the night
And feels alone in bed,
Except perhaps for a cat or two,
The dog curled in its little bed,
A goldfish shining in its bowl,
A stack of books on the table.
Turn on a circle of light
And open a book,
A two-day old newspaper.
Peel a banana, drink a glass of milk
And talk to the cat.
Make a game with treats.
The loneliness was just a moment,
Soothed by resumption of sleep.
