Raindrops falling down the windowpane
a gentle tap
tap,
tap.
echoing the rhythm of my thoughts.
And I can't help but wonder
why
everything had to go so wrong.
why one little mistake cost us
everything.
But I knew it was more than one mistake.
I remember seeing you there,
at the party,
in the corner,
kissing her with drunken happiness
and I knew
the rumors were true
and we were over.
Forever.
So I thought it had to stop.
I was the one to break it off.
But when you came
then left again,
I was the shattered one
I was the one left standing
alone,
confused,
and lost in the dark.
It's been three weeks now,
and yesterday I saw you at Starbucks
with her.
It's clear you've forgotten me,
so why can't I get over you?
Why can't I leave you behind?
Why do I still spend my nights
crying
to my pillow
over something that was never meant to be?
Raindrops falling down the windowpane.
a gentle tap,
tap,
tap.
echoing the rhythm of my tears.

I love it! I especially like the repetition of the beginning at the end. It ties the whole thing together.

This is a really great piece! I really like the story in this because it's powerful and sad. I like how that first and last stanza connect because it makes the piece seem finished. My favorite line is "kissing her with drunken happiness" because it tells so much and conveys a lot of emotion by just hinting at it and never actually saying it. I like the title a lot too because it is inventive, not clichéd, creative and reflects the poem really well too. Great job and good luck in the contest!
