who lives underground.
I live off all the human’s scaps,
you leave lying around.
I’m not a pretty sight,
I think you’ll all agree.
But if I grew some feathers,
and lived up in a tree.
You’d buy me lots of monkey nuts,
and feed me lots of seeds.
You’d build us all a little house,
attend to all our needs.
We’re just the scurge of human kind,
of that there is no doubt.
We’re just viewed as vermin,
something to be wiped out.
You fill our holes with poison,
and death comes slow but sure.
Its something we’ve come to expect,
something to endure.
Now our tame brothers in the labs,
get food shelter and more.
Do not become the cause of hate,
get sympathy galore.
While people outside demonstrate,
and do each other harm.
They burn each others property,
the cause of much alarm.
Now people are such funny folks,
I think you’d all agree.
What do they think would happen,
if they set our brothers free,
They’d join us in the burrows,
having warfarin for tea.
Now all these conscientious folk,
have our welfare at heart.
If they want to solve the problem,
dare I mention for a start
They give themselves as guinipigs,
and doctors would rejoice.
There’d be no need to demonstrate,
they then would have a choice.
Help rid mankind of diseases,
now the rats are free
Or perhaps they’d like to join them,
having warfarin for tea.

This is a really cool poem. Man this says a lot of truth. I enjoyed the read!!! Thank you for entering my contest
-
This really reminded me of the ee cummings poem "me up at does." I love that you've written from the rodent's point of view... and how you point out that lab rats get lots of attention, while everyone seems to turn a blind eye when their wild brethren are poisoned.

-
Wow, this is really well done, and so poignant! I don't think I've read many tributes to rats, but they certainly deserve it. Fantastic job.

-
Very innovative and interesting... the rhyme did justice to the concept... I like how you drew parallels between the mice in labs and the undomesticated rats... well written!
Thank you for entering
-
Very well written;
It was wonderfully creative, and original - to be honest, I quite like rats & mice; not the 'wild' formats, but as pets, I think they're absolutely gorgeous ;
And wouldn't panick if I saw a wild one in my house, however show me a spider / cockroach and I'm a goner.
I enjoyed this, we rarely see from their views and you wrote it so well - thanks for entering
-
Creative! I don't think I have ever seen one done from this point of view, but you are right! We all should think about this, and remember what they might feel, think the next time we see one...
Best of luck in this contest!

You did a great job, and i know a lot of people who are strongly against animal testing. You definitly speak with a lot of passion in this piece. Thank you for entering.
-
I like the way you begin to speak up for the rat and I also find humour in here.
Most I read was directly related to our ethics or lack of them towards the animal rather than being about 'Animal' and what that means to you in itself.
This I believe is the makings of a good write, which I think would improve with the addition of some line breaks in choice places.
Thank you for your entry

I have taken your good advice and introduced stanzas and
correct grammar. It reads much better now. I had posted

I used to have 3 pet rats and I adored them and so did the rest of my family but when people saw wild ats they'd scream at them and try to kill them, I thought it was horrible! A really great poem

Food for thought
and a different view on the daily "rat race" indeed. We should pay attention not to get too lost in positioning ourselves too far above other creatures. Great work. PS. There is a (heavy metal) song by German group Schweisser (not everyone's cup of tea for sure) called "Herr der Fliegen" about a sudden electric fallout. For those who want to have a try in German lyrics, here's the link: http://www.metrolyrics.com/bete-zum-herr-der-fliegen-lyrics-schweisser.html
Horrifying thoughts.

This is lovely. I never had a rat even though I wanted one. I had hampsters and white mice growing up. I adored those white mice and got mad when family and friends wrinkled their noses to them. They followed me everwhere and loved me too. They are tiny creatures with big hearts that I am proud to fill with my love!

-
this is awesome! believe it or not, rats don't repulse me. not saying i'da wanna touch a wild one, but my friend had some domesticated rats and they were really cool.
-
this reminds me of the rat on the movie Charlotte's Web.
a different perspective indeed, I was married to a Rat once, I should have poisoned her, Rat's don't get much respect, but there is a Temple in India where they are catered to, sort of revered as dieties.
thanks for entering and good luck.

-
Now this is rhyming that I can actually read and enjoy.
It is on a topic that I care a lot about, which might be a factor to why I like it also. My favorite part is:
"But if I grew some feathers
And lived up in a tree
You’d buy me lots of monkey nuts
And feed me lots of seeds
You’d build us all a little house
Attend to all our needs"
I like the point-of-view that this is written in. Wonderful write.

I love animals, but I have a low tolerance for animal rights poetry. Yours is clever however. Great flow, as well.
Best of luck and thanks for entering! -

The Demon Eve
Many Thanks for your kind comments on "Animal Rights"
It was written to show the hypocracy of Animal rights
Protestors as seen through the eyes of the rats.
Thanks again and Best Wishes George ++++

wow, this is powerful!

goodluck -
So strongly true...your animal rights writes are very wel done and orginal...I saved a rat from being food for a snake...he lived with me for four years...when he developed a tumor, I took him to the vet...he stated it was s sad that we created tumors in them everyday, but had no cure for on in a rat...how sad we have become...Lovely work...keep it up.
Love
