Never Again

When I was just a little girl,
my mom wanted my hair to curl.

Bobby pins wound real tight,
made it hard to sleep at night.

Next morning, filled with hope,
with rat tailed comb she'd prod and poke.

Beautiful curls on my head,
by end of day would be dead.

Dropping down into my face,
every hair out of place.

I'd come home, my mom would cry
We'll try again!...I asked why?

Permanents that didn't stick,
made my little tummy sick.

Goops, gels and aerosol spray,
nothing made my hairdo stay.

Finally I didn't care,
I just wanted long straight hair.

So I let my hair grow and grow,
to my waist and far below.

Cut it once since then,
won't ever do it again.

Long and straight is the only way,
I've found to avoid a bad hair day!

cute poem. When I was 5, I was in a school assembly and they wanted me to be a doll. So ... my mom made me this cute little dress (we were dirt poor) they didn't have curling irons then, so she used a butter knife and one by one made ringlets all over my head. I was kind of a tob boy and took one look, then leaned over the bathroom sink and ran water over my head. My mother was sooooo mad. She sat me in the sun, brushed my hair till it was dry and then we started all over. That evening when I came on stage and heard all the oohs and aahs...I strutted like a peacock! thanks for the reminder

hahahahaha Argh! Being dubiously gifted with natural curl, I'm jealous! But, I suppose we each want what we don't have. I really enjoyed this. Best of luck to you!

lol - I certainly can remember those days! My mom used rag curls and my hair looked nice - for awhile. I couldn't stand (or breath) the aerosols, so never had to put up with that - but the rat-tail combs and gels I definitely remember! My hair is long again - not as long as yours - but I just use hot rollers and let it go.
This was very nicely done. Great wording and images and rhyme.
    Thank you for your entry
