clock ticking
in time to the
drumming of fingertips
wine left untouched,
coffee my choice now
I search for
the timid child,
heart full of love
instead I find angst
and fear in this teen's
rough form
silver tongue wagging,
spitting venomous bile
continuing to strike
with unwritten words
on an imaginary notebook
arrows of hatred
missing their target,
frustration continues
to wash over her in waves
finally,
acknowledgement that
this war of wills
is not hers to win
words need not pass her lips,
only an embrace between
mother and daughter

Sometimes words are not needed. Even for a poet.
