sits a row of graves
some crosses some rocks
markers of those
who have fallen
brothers and sisters
who fell as one
defending one another
not fighting for freedom
but for those
who stand beside you
those who will never
be able to forget you
those who will
always remember
just what you
gave up for them
a life they will
never again see
partly in the shadows...
a young woman stands
with an unbrella
wishing the rain
to consumer her
in her grief
on one side of her
sits a row of graves
those who stood
and served
with her father
behind her sightly apart
from the other graves
is the one dedicated
to her father
all of these
men and woman
gave their life
for their country
and she stands there
trying to understand
why they do that
put their hand
in the air
and take an oath
to protect and serve
their country in need
trying to understand
why people must
be sent to war
trying to understand
what must go through
the minds of
those who serve
who are sent to war
unable to decide
whether or not
to rejoice in
their sacrifice
for their country
or to grieve
with bitterness
for the lost
loved ones
as she stands there
her soul is torn in two
unable to decide
between light and dark
partly in the shadows...
she can hear
the cries of those
who cant get
to the side
of their friend
fast enough in war
she can hear
the cries of those
who are trying
to get someone
to help them
in their pain
and terror
someone who was
shot down in war
she can hear
the cries and sobs
of the loved ones
back home who just
learned the news
of their soldier
she can hear
the cries of
the parentless children
trying to understand
why their parents
wont be coming home
to get them anymore
she can hear
the war cries
of our men
and our enemies
and yet she
doesnt understand
why do we have war
what is the
purpose of war
when all she can
see, feel, and hear
is pain and anguish
she twirls her umbrella
as a way to keep
those thoughts from
drowning her
in their down pour

I love this part. Reminds me of a child not understanding whats going on. Thanks for taking the time to enter,
best of luck. -
this was by far and away my favourite in the shadows section - blown away by the content of this, you couldn't have written it better.
thanks for entering! -
thank you for entering! very emotional and true. true, war is very sad but there is great horror behind it, you really brought that out here. good job and good luck

This was a really great write.. Very emotional as well as draining in a way.. I have been at a grave looking on as they place another loved father, husband, and son in the ground. It's a hard thing to watch.. But than again I can't let myself feel bad either in a way, because they gave their life up for mine to be "free" here in america, so even though it has such a high cost I tell them silently "thank you"...
Again thank you for sharing..
Best of luck..

I really liked this poem although the way it is written is kinda distracting. But your message really hits home beeing that I have been the person standing at the grave wondering why. Thank you for entering it in my contest and good luck.

This is so sad, and so true. Sometimes people forget about the horror of war! Really great poem though!! xx
-
Very touching and true!!!!!!!!!! How the horrors of war and the loss of life goes on as many look at it's progress, but can not stop the terror or pain!!!!!!!! Lovely piece!!!!!!!
-
Thank you for entering my military contest. This was an interesting way to annotate the terrible things that happen to people whenever there is a war.
