Like many old men

he just slipped away -
another insignificant death,
like so many old men
who once lived a life

we put him to rest -
oblivious to others,
like many old men
who once lived a life

he was our father -
significantly so,
like many old men
who once lived a life

he that nurtured us -
loved us without expectation,
like many old men
who once lived a life

he was not significant –
not in the eyes of others,
but like many old men
our father too once lived a life

Author notes

In loving memory of my dad, who passed away 6 years ago. He was a humble man, and never stood out for anything other than his love for his wife and children, and to help others less fortunate than him. May his ways be carved deep within me.

In writing this poem, I have tried to keep it simplistic and 'humble'.

    Stand up man!

Wow...never stood out for anything? You're kidding right? Sure you are. Men who are real men take care of their families, are loving & look out for others. There's a real shortage of real men these days, especially in this country! Bravo for Dad & the sensitive & wonderful son he raised. Viva real men!!!! !

Frans, Your words have the tears streaming down my cheeks as I write to you and say kudos for such loving thoughts. So many fathers are just like yours was and still is as he watches from above now. I'm very sure that this put such a beautiful smile on his face and made him so proud. I do need to get some kleenex now and thank you for sharing such beauty with all of us. Love and God bless, Joyce

      Dear Joyce

It is times as these - when someone unknown - crosses my path with such a lovely comment, that I am truly blessed. The Sunday after my father died, an 'old man' in our congregation stood up and hugged me. I mentioned to him that my father used to do this. Now each Sunday I receive my hug, and never has he skipped once in six years! I salute this 'old man' who gives me this great pleasure of experience! I'm 57 and he 82, but I still have this little 'boy-child' within me. God bless. Frans

    ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Our fathers may be simple and not in the least bit famous but they give so unconditionally their love and devotion. This is a very touching and loving tribute to your father.

this is a very heartfelt piece dedicated to your father and to all the fathers out there...our fathers maybe be insignificant to others but to children's hearts...they are more than heroes...I love this awesome piece.

This is a gentle and loving tribute to your father. If he showed love for his wife and children and found time to help those less fortunate, I would say he lead a very full life. I'm sure there are many men who would be willing to have that be their epitaph: "I loved and I cared". Peace, Liz
