Where have all the knights gone?

Where have all the knights gone?
It grows dimmer and dimmer here
So full of pain and so full of fear

Where have all the knights gone?
Code of chivalry seems so lost
No one wants to pay the cost

What happened to moral admiration?
What happened to love’s obligation?
What happened to the gallant knights?

Where has all the duty gone?
We bear today’s twisted morality
We must tolerate this sad reality

Where has all the duty gone?
We feel the unbearable strife
No one is devoting their life

What happened to great inspiration?
What happened to ethical dedication?
What happened to the gracious knights?

Where has all the honor gone?
Everyone’s morality is at odds
While helping others seems so lost

Where has all the honor gone?
No one outside your code is revered
Responsibility to others disappeared

What happened to committed motivation?
What happened to debt’s expectation?
What happened to the graceful knights?

Author notes

I don't know if knights as I imagine them ever existed truly with their chivalry, but I wrote this anyways to express my feeling of sadness at the lack of people who help others no matter who they are. I dream of being a knight of unconditional love.

Do you think there were ever knights like we imagine them to be?

I like the poem. I just don't relate knights with good things though. Something about the crusades just makes me not approve of them quite as much.

The knights I had in mind were like King Arthur and the knights of the round table. The image of people devoted to doing good regardless of who they were helping. That concept is not seen today, so I vented through the poem. Knights like that though probably never existed, which makes me even more sad.

Yeah, I remember reading The Once and Future King last year, and it talked about the knights of the round table. But even those knights were not perfect, they were fundamentally flawed. Still though, I get your point. I think the concept of working for justice is what makes knights appealing, because the concept they stand for is glorified.
