"Different"

I have always been different
And I enjoyed being special
But years go by
We get older
Things we never heard of
Become clear
Such as “sexual orientation”

To be 14 and unsure
Who you can tell
Of your sudden realization
Of just how different you are
You aren’t like the girls
Who you sit next to in class
You’re different

You don’t just like
The jock across the room
But your beauty behind him
Trying to get his attention
And you don’t know why
I mean how could you
She’s a girl
Like you
But you’re different

You think of the possibilities
You think of the options
And you come to the conclusion
That your difference is not bad
No matter what is said
You are not only different
But you are special
And not alone
Perhaps you are different
From those who sit in this classroom
But not different from everyone
You are not alone

Great poem! I really liked the way you addressed the alienation some kids feel in school by being different from everyone else. Thanks for entering!
