I've become a senior citizen,
Yes I've met my golden years,
But no one ever told us,
It was the stage for pain and tears.
I sit here all alone now,
Six children i have raised,
And perhaps, they'll come to visit,
When they lay me in my grave.
I talk to them on the telephone,
But only if I call,
And it's me who has to travel,
In order to see one of them at all!
I worked hard for many years,
As a nurse, i worked and paid Uncle Sam,
And now that I'm sick and all alone,
Does my government give a damn?
They gave me a card A & B,
Which they call Medicare,
And they deduct the cost for this,
Out of my check, left almost bare.
Now if i need medicines,
I guess I'd better pray,
'Cause the government now tells me,
I need a supplement, for which I'll pay.
So I'm a senior citizen,
With four fourteen a month to live,
And yet when I go to my Father's house
I always know to give.
I know we are growing old,
But we worked hard, fought wars, raised kids,
So please, just give us a little love,
Before, they close the lid!
Author notes
How many others who loved their children and did without are forgotten/ how many others who worked all their lives have to choose food or medications? Please reply

This was truly great, really shows what our old folks have to go through. That's why some old people eat cat food and it's a crime. In Japan the old folks are considered and honored. Great write sis, keep it up and good luck in the contest.

You did really well showing how the seniors are resentful, yet don't want to seem needing. You show the determination of that particular generation very well, and Congratulations on the first poem that wasn't pre-written. I hope you do well, and may this Christmas be blissful.
