Memories

The air smells of smog and smoke,
and the scent of the hundred thousand bodies
That crowd the streets in the daytime.
But in the darkness,
the only movement is the leaves dancing
On the freezing night air.
The only sound,
The echoes of voices far away.

Here in the alley there is no one,
No one except the girl.
Dark, matted hair cloaks her eyes,
Even in her sleep,
She clutches the bag beside her
With a strength borne from fear.

A startled grey bird
Crashes from the branches overhead.
She wakes, fear pounding in her heart
Terror in her eyes.

For a moment, just one moment,
She forgets.
Then the sounds of screaming
And the memories fill her drowsy mind.
She squeezes her eyes tight shut.
As all the pain comes flooding back.

Author notes

This poem started as a short story I wrote last year, and I've tried a few times to cut a lot out and turn it into a poem. Still a work in progress

    Good write !

I know what you mean about some times it is very hard to cut back on words,in order to make it into a poem for at times we all go through a time when at least one thing we are writeing , just seems to keep flowing on. Even though I think that this is really well written. The deep Emotions that you put in it are your personal ones , and they are useally the best ones to me for you know how they really feel and have felt !For a moment, just one moment,She forgets. Is what really jumps out in here to me as a time of peice that is felt if even for just a short time.Kepp on writeing I would love to read more !!!!!!!
