O Friend! I know not which way I must look
For comfort, being, as I am, opprest,
Is it that Man is soon deprest?
A thoughtless Thing! who, once unblest
Here roving wild, he laid him down to rest
Dark and more dark the shades of evening fell;
A lonely scene more lonesome; among woods
At noon; and ‘mid the calm of summer nights
I listened, motionless and still;
Thou from thy Alpine holds at length are driven
A flock of sheep that leisurely pass by,
One after one; the sound of rain, and bees
Of harmony, with instinct more divine;
We must be free or die, who speak the tongue
Thou hadst a voice whose sound was like the sea
Pure as the naked heavens, majestic, free;
Who journey thither find themselves alone
With a few sheep, with rocks and stones and kites
