Its been eight, going on nine years since my fortieth.
The snow I think then, was just a tad deeper,
a bit more colder,
it kept me spinning in lignite ramblings of self loathing,
and spiritual bankruptcy. My Sun had not yet risen at forty however, it was just beginning to break the horizon. Becoming clearer, brighter, and yes, warmer. I find myself basking in its warming rays of enlightenment, Melting pride, and ego. Nurturing humility and allowing me to grow even more than I thought I ever could before. Since my fortieth, the snow has melted, the coldness of winters heart has disappeared. I have found my Spring! I am aware of the coming Autumn, mortality and when the time comes I will welcome it as my graduation.
For I will have worked, and bled, I will have cried, and shed life's vestments,My robes will become new, as yet again, my outlook and knowing of heavenly truths. For what we think we know in life, is but a mere charade in terms of the cosmic, the heavenly, and the spiritual. These truths become evident after forty winters or more. And I welcome them. Yes, my fortieth winter, Its been eight, going on nine years since then,I am glad to have climbed from that drift, to have trod upon more fertile ground, Love, the oasis in an arctic world, understanding,
the thawing of my cold heart, forgiveness,
the Sun's first ray of spring,
My fortieth winter is over, and I have moved on.

"a bit more colder," - this should be "a bit colder" so you may want to fix that little typo.
I know how easily it can happen when we are tweaking and editing.
I loved the message in this piece and am so pleased to have read this tonight. I do believe this verse would be more effective drawn out to shorter but more lines, even though I know the contest specs are asking for a specific number.
Thank you for such a delightful entry. Best of luck in the judging. ~Pamela

This needs to be 19 lines and I keep counting 16.
If you could expand a bit that would be good. Judging will commence today, April 21, 2008 so you may want to tweak beforehand. I will be back.

I liked this very much. Especially that the sun rose, melting pride and ego and warming you with enlightenment. Lovely concepts, "shedding life's vestments" for a heavenly robe, and reaching the oasis of love. Great conclusion.
