‘Twas many hundred years ago,
A long way from this land.
A city with a loyal king,
Built right upon the sand.
One day flew past a hungry bird,
Or so it seemed at first.
With leather wings and diamond teeth,
It landed and then cursed.
“This city I will feed upon,
Their cows and sheep and game.
Or I will have a man a month,
Until I end my reign!”
At this the people shook with fear,
For many times a year.
In turn the daughter of the king,
Stepped forward with a tear.
“Take me you monstrous beast of death!”
She shouted to the host.
And with a cry, began to tie,
Herself onto the post.
The dragon came to eat its prey,
But then a knight drew near.
He shouted “beast, come dual with me!
Or have you too much fear?”
Out of its nostrils spouted flames,
To show its mighty power.
“For I Sir George, the greatest knight,
Will slay you right this hour!”
So there and then as he had said,
They fought for the princess.
Then in the end as the knight won,
The princess gave a kiss.
“Thank you dear knight for saving me,
From that ferocious beast.
Let us go home to spread the news,
That we now throw a feast!”
And from that day, it was to stay,
The way it was before.
For many here, there is no fear,
That dragon was no more!
